Windows' File Manager lets you move files from one disk to
another without manually copying them and deleting them.
This trick is documented in the manual, but the explanation
is cryptic. To move files or directories, highlight
everything you want to move, then, while holding down the
mouse button and the <Alt> key, drag the file(s) or
directory(ies) to the destination disk and drop them off.
Depending on your confirmation settings, you may see a
dialog box that asks for confirmation. Once you answer
affirmatively, File Manager will move your files.
If you don't hold down the <Alt> key, File Manager will copy
rather than move the files. In fact, File Manager clues you
in visually as to whether you're moving or copying drag some
files and while you're still holding down the mouse button,
try pressing and releasing <Alt>. The file icons in the
source directory will appear and disappear as you do so.
Whether the files are copied or moved depends on whether
you're pressing <Alt> when you release the mouse button.
One caveat: Unless you use an undelete utility, you can't
compare the files after the move with the ones you started
with. But I've been doing this for about 16 months and have
yet to encounter a problem. This technique really saves an
incredible amount of work.

Editor's Note: You can also pick up and move entire branches
of a directory tree within File Manager. This makes it a
snap to archive files by moving them to floppies, deleting
them from the hard disk as you do so.
